Tone Collectors. Who Are They and Why Do They Need Our Help?
Humans collect things. Hubcaps. Teaspoons. Calendars. Paper. Rocks. Scissors. Dead butterflies. Guitars. Guitar Amps. Almost anything.
Not knowing anything about collectible teaspoons, we’ll focus on why many guitarists buy multiple tube guitar amps!
What is it that causes many guitar players to endlessly search for tone?
Let’s get the profit motive out of the way. So-called “serious” guitar and amp collectors spend up to six figures on certain pieces. They generally have a tarnished image in the eyes of most mere mortal guitarists. "They're in it only for the money," and “Collectors have driven up prices so we regular players will never be able to afford them,” these players say.
Many guitarists base that perception on a belief that these collectors are only in it for the profit. Not in every case we think. Regardless, we’re interested in those of us who don't have five and six figure guitar and guitar amp-buying budgets. We’ll let someone else ponder the motivation of the wealthy few.
So, why do “regular” players, whatever their experience or skill level, buy multiple amps?
Well, in our opinion they are "tone collectors" completely hooked on tone … different tones … lots of tone. The sound of an electric guitar played through a tube amp is so pleasing that they never want to stop acquiring new tones.
They may initially contract their disease by buying an amp to suit a musical style or a particular guitar or because they found a deal they couldn’t pass up. However, before long, the infection spreads and this common guitarist becomes a tone collector. The primary symptom is the need for more tone simply because it feels good. They’re infected.
The look of an amp, the feel of an amp or the association with famous users of an amp can all contribute to the severity of the illness. However, what really drives this cat is the need for feel-good tone medicine.
Now, teaspoons are a hell of a lot less expensive than amps (at least we think so … maybe there are five figure teaspoons out there … if you’re a teaspoon connoisseur let us know!). Therefore, budget generally restricts how much tone medicine a tone collector can buy (lucky teaspoon collectors can control their affliction with a relatively steady stream of the cure - by the teaspoonful).
Unfortunately, this means most tone collectors are constantly struggling to control their chronic disease. They need their medicine, but they can’t afford it.
Painful? Sure. Sad? Hell no! Those of us with the affliction love it! Playing a favorite guitar through a great tube amp is so therapeutic that once you get the bug the only thing that will cure it is tone medicine and lots of it!
So, what are we at Mack Music doing to help these diseased guitarists? Plenty!
